“Grandeur of the Porch View” by Catherine Zickgraf

Yesterday was 100 degrees. Late summer
marks dry death. The sun is too much.

Come out on the porch though. Warm rain
lands fast, rising from the street as mist.
The soft grass glows. Let’s enjoy it.

Change is natural, but none of this is normal.
We can’t adapt as fast as the surface temp
rises. We set our habitat on fire.

Stand outside with me. The rain is gorgeous,
everything looks clean. Even the air
makes me want to breathe.

Listen to our little part of the neighborhood.
Currents in the storm drain head to the river,
and here we are alive to hear it.

Two lifetimes ago, Catherine performed her poetry in Madrid. Now her main jobs are to write and hang out with her family. These poems, “Psalm after Hibernation” and “Grandeur of the Porch View,” are from her in-progress first full-length manuscript, Sermons
