“Sleeping Cat” by Glenis Moore

He sleeps on his back,
front paws stretched out,
riding the curve of dreams.
Ears twitching to hear
the silence of the still
summer’s day, his tail folded
in haste beneath him.
I do not know what he sees
as he snores his way through
the sultry afternoon
but, when his legs flail frantically,
I pray that he is enjoying
the shadows of dappled light
not being pursued by the wolves
of his solitary ancestors’ dread.
