“Sunk Cost” by Chris Kads

Enjoying tomato soup
for the first time at eighteen,

my brain mutes
his beefsteak-squeezing lips

and echoes only the phrase
I’ve been too stubborn
to accept:

Taste buds change.
Taste buds change.
Taste buds change.
